Salt Flats Craziness
Okay... I can't write a lot, but I've *got* to write something.

My good friend Steve and I have been wanting to find a good place to race our new cars. He has a 2006 Cobalt SS (sweet ride), and I just got a 2007 Mustang GT (which, unfortunately, I really don't know how to drive well yet).

So, today we decided to just head out west and end up where ever we happened to end up. We took a 30-minute detour off I-80, and found the Miller Motorsports Park, which I might say was a beautiful sight. They like mustangs out there. ;-)

After that, we decided to keep on heading west, and we eventually found our selves heading toward the Bonneville Salt Flats (Speedway). We drove and drove and drove..... until... there wasn't.... any.... road ... left. Neither of us had ever been there before, so we just kinda looked out and blinked in disbelief. No fees, no roadway markers, no people flagging us down wanting our money, no... nothing - but salt - in every direction. So, we looked at each other with a wry smile and started out onto the salt.

Needless to say, I drove like a mad-man. I was fishtailing across the salt at 60 MPH, and feeling totally safe. Cruising at 100 MPH felt equally safe. Steve and I raced probably a dozen times and were just having a blast. We soon decided to head out and see how far it went.

Steve and I arrived at the 5 mile marker and decided to turn around. At about this point, I hadn't reached more than 120MPH without feeling kind of queasy, due to the lack of familiarity I had with the region. So, when we turned around, I knew where I had been, and I knew it was flat and solid. So what did I do? Yup, I opened it up.

I hit 135 in 4th gear and was just about crapping my pants, but I knew she could give more. When I shifted to 5th, I felt a pretty hefty lack of power, when compared to the previous gear. She got up to 145 and I didn't want to wait to accelerate any more. She wasn't even close to red-lining, but if she was still accelerating, I couldn't feel it, and I was pretty uhh.... ready to slow down. heh.. So... I got my 2007 Mustang GT up to 145, and I think that's about the limit I'm ready to go - for now.

Steve and I puttered around the flats for about an hour. Crimoney, we should have brought our cameras. Both of our cars are black, or were black before we took this trip. The back-end of Steve's Cobalt was, I kid you not, as white as the whitest car you see on any road. From the rear, it looked like Steve's car was .... painted white. It was really quite amazing. Mine was white, too - but not nearly as bad as Steve's. Salt was pretty much everywhere.

Anyway... We met some good folks from the Carolinas visiting Utah and chatted with them a bit, and then headed out for a wash and a bite. And that's about it!
