1st Nephi : 1
Three things stood out at me during tonight's study session:

1. I wonder where the translation of the plates of Lehi are right now?  I've never read the history of the Chuch, so I don't know if it's documented there, but Joseph Smith had them, and had them returned to him after he lost them.  Did he destroy them?  Are they somewhere else now?  I'd be curious to find out.

2. Why would Nephi include verse 3?  Imagine if *you* were keeping a journal, even if God directed you to keep it.  Would you take time out to write "I know that this is true because I'm writing it, and I'm writing the things I know."  I'm not sure why I found that interesting this time around, but it did.

3. The last part of verse 20 intrigued me. "But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance."

God chooses people, and he chooses them based on their faithfulness.  Chosen to be made mighty by God unto the power of deliverance.

What do we need "deliverance" from?  Well, Satan of course.  In Lehi's case, he needed to be delivered from those trying to kill him (as it was with Joseph Smith with the plates).

Yet another verse in the Book of Mormon (and this is the first chapter in the first book), which tells us we can all overcome and be delievered from our ailments.  How?  Be faithful.

Yup.. It's right there in verse 20.

Also, for as long as I can remember to do it, I want to document all the verses in each chapter which speak of Christ.  I'll just list the verses at the end of the commentary.

Verses which speak of Christ: 9,11,14,15,19,20
